Now you may say that this simply reflects divided government. But while there are many instances of divided government on that chart — the 104th Congress, for instance, when Newt Gingrich and his Republican revolutionaries faced off against President Bill Clinton and still managed to pass 333 public laws — there’s no session of Congress with such a poor record of productivity.” - Ezra Klein

Klein also points out that, while Congress is still in session, “the 112th is three-quarters done, and it’s not yet half as productive as the next least-productive congress.”

13 reasons why this is the worst Congress ever

Over a lifetime, nearly one in two women will be victims of sexual violence. The Violence Against Women Act empowers local communities to fight back, providing essential resources to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

The law has been an unqualified success. Since its passage in 1994, women killed by an intimate partner have decreased 34%.

But unless Congress reauthorizes the Violence Against Women Act this year, all of this progress could be reversed. The new version of the bill not only continues proven programs, but extends protections to more people, including those in same-sex relationships.

Sign the petition to tell Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. And please reblog/share!

This is huge. We must support this.

This is what it looks like when members of Congress stop giving a fuck.  Steve King (R - Iowa), of course, sits on the committee debating the Stop Online Piracy Act.

Full committee markup of H.R. 3261, or SOPA, is scheduled to continue today, Dec. 16 at 10 A.M. Eastern.

Less than an hour after passing the so-called Protect Life Act to guard the unborn, the House of Representatives passed a bill that the EPA warns will kill thousands of people prematurely.

House Republicans argued that the EPA Regulatory Relief Act of 2011 was a “timeout” from long-delayed regulations aimed at mercury that threatened to raise costs on boiler operators and incinerators. But the measure also exempts smaller burning facilities from any regulation at all.

The EPA estimated that the bill, H.R. 2550, would allow 20,000 people to die prematurely from pollution.

But for the GOP, preserving the jobs was more important.

“The House Republican jobs agenda is focused on removing the uncertainty hampering small businesses through policies that promote private sector growth,” said House GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.). “Small businesses and entrepreneurial start-ups are the engine of job creation in America, and Washington should not be working to make it more costly and more difficult for them to do business.”

He added that the proposed boiler regulations “could raise compliance costs, take away billions of dollars in capital annually and put hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee immediately began campaigning on the vote, attacking Democrats who opposed the bill, saying they voted to “endanger over 300,000 American jobs.” The committee’s press release cited a report prepared for the Council of Industrial Boiler Owners.

A working list of demands:

1. Congress pass HR 1489 (“Return to Prudent Banking Act”)

2. Use Congressional authority and oversight to ensure appropriate federal Agencies fully investigate and prosecute the Wall Street Criminals

3. Congress enact legislation to protect our democracy by reversing the effects of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision

4. Congress pass the Buffett rule on fair taxation so the rich and corporations pay their fair share; close corporate tax loop-holes; enact a prohibition on hiding funds off-shore

5. Congress completely revamp the Securities & Exchange commission at all levels

6. Congress pass specific and effective laws limiting the influence of lobbyists; eliminate the practice of lobbyists writing legislation that ends up on the floor of congress

7. Congress passing “Revolving Door Legislation” eliminating the ability of former government regulators going to work for corporations that they once regulated

8. Eliminate “personhood” legal status for corporations

Read the list for more information. Under #8 there’s the awful statistic that the 14th amendment, created to supposedly give equal rights to African Americans, had 307 cases brought before court (between 1890-1910); 288 were brought by corporations and only 19 by actual people.

At least Reagan fired air traffic controllers outright.  The Senate’s modern-day version just keeps security inspectors and construction workers at airport projects throughout the country in a sort of purgatory.

“No one needs to worry about safety,” says Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.  Yes, because we’re asking airport security personnel to “to work without pay and to charge their government travel expenses to their personal credit cards to keep airports operating safely,” according to the New York Times.

Sounds like a good fucking plan to us.

and congress recessed before solving this. ‘we’re not gonna default on our debts. we’ve worked hard enough this week.’ i’d get canned from my job if i left a project this big unsolved/unfinished.
