In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty.

Thomas Jefferson  (via bringtheruckuss)

“Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly, that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in nowise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.”

The Virginia Act For Establishing Religious Freedom
Thomas Jefferson, 1786

Also too, seems Jefferson foresaw the circa 2011 Republican Party with these prescient quotes:

“I hope we shall… crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations which dare already to challenge our government in a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”

~ Thomas Jefferson 1816

“The end of democracy…  will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.”

~ Thomas Jefferson 1825

Also too, may I add a few more from my Revolutionary Hero, Thomas Paine:

“My mind is my own church.”

“One good schoolmaster is of more use than a hundred priests.”

“Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity.”

“It is not a God, just and good, but a devil, under the name of God, that the Bible describes.”

“Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst.” (bears repeating)

“There are matters in the Bible, said to be done by the express commandment of God, that are shocking to humanity and to every idea we have of moral justice.”

God is an essence that we know nothing of. Until this awful blasphemy is got rid of, there will never be any liberal science in the world.

- John Adams, Founding Father and 2nd President of the United States

Studying the human genome has disproven the possibility that we sprang from two people:

Karl Giberson - who taught physics at Eastern Nazarene College until his views became too uncomfortable in Christian academia - says Protestants who question Adam and Eve are akin to Galileo in the 1600s, who defied Catholic Church doctrine by stating that the earth revolved around the sun and not vice versa. Galileo was condemned by the church, and it took more than three centuries for the Vatican to express regret at its error.

“When you ignore science, you end up with egg on your face,” Giberson says. “The Catholic Church has had an awful lot of egg on its face for centuries because of Galileo. And Protestants would do very well to look at that and to learn from it.”

The backlash from the literalists has been intense:

Harlow, who like Schneider has tenure and considers himself a committed Christian, said that the backlash reflects the views of fundamentalists within the Reformed denomination, not what most people think. “I work in the mainstream of Biblical scholarship, and we believe that the early chapters of Genesis are divinely inspired stories which imagine the human condition and creation of the world. Their intent is to make theological statements. They weren’t written to provide geological or biological information,” Harlow said. “My college freshmen seem to be able to handle this, but fundamentalists get all bent out of shape over this.”

NOTE: Watch how they blame the messenger, while never stating what they’re doing to reclaim their religion from the EVIL CHRISTIAN TERRORISTS who have successfully hijacked Christianity for their own despicable ends in exactly the same way as Al Queda and The Taliban have hijacked Islam

August, 2011.

Outside lollapalooza.

Chicago, IL.

This is absolutely disgusting.  It’s terrifying.

I cannot believe that people like this even exist.

Standing there, watching those people, listening to them speak.  It was fucking scary.  The man would point at people, telling girls that they were just stupid rebels, whores, at one point a man walked by with a disgusted look on his face and the man with the megaphone called him a tranny.  I felt so sick just standing there, and seeing that girls my age were part of that group.  Girls who think that they are of no importance in the world.

I’m for non violence like 90% of the time.

I wouldn’t be if I were there though. Fuck shit up: feminist style.

I like the “READ BIBLE FOR DETAILS”. If you are curious to more about this fabulous offer, check your handy dandy bible. I wonder if they were giving away bibles. Would someone go home, find a bible somewhere else, look up these passages they remembered, and realize that yes, they do sympathize with these people and would like to join their organization?

yes, because freedom of religion doesn’t include freedom from religion and i have to obey what that dumb book tells you to do.

take it away, emerald.

I wonder if Christian Dominionist Republican Presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry know that if they intend to inflict their ludicrous beliefs on me, they *will* have to kill me.

Do you think Perry and Bachmann go with massive extermination of non-Christians, like Hitler did?

Or maybe a few hundred thousand at a time, like Saddam Hussein?

Or maybe release us in the wild so Rick Perry’s NRA buddies can have some sport before they kill us?

I invite the “Good Christian” Tumblrs to chime in with your ideas for ridding the country of the non-believers - here are some ideas submitted by your fellow Friends of Jesus:

This nation is facing an active concerted campaign to have a Christian version of Sharia law imposed on all of us (like it or not…) with active campaigns to create a set of laws forcing those that oppose them to live under their Christian principles,” writes Mixner, in, “Stop Tax Exemptions For Religious Organizations.”
